Why you should clean your iPhone

Health and hygiene

Our gadgets come with us everywhere, so inevitably, they’re going to get dirty, picking up horrors such as dirt, food, germs and dust on a daily basis.

We often use our smartphones on public transport, where we’ll be coming into contact with surfaces other people have touched, some of whom may be unwell.

Once we touch our phones, we unknowingly transfer germs picked up on the bus, train or tube onto our devices, increasing our chances of catching viral infections.

We also tend to eat with our smartphones close at hand, which means our devices can become potential hotbeds for bacteria associated with unpleasant bugs such as Salmonella and E. Coli.

Whether it’s stuffed in your bag or out and about with you, it’s easy to set up your very own ecosystem of health hazards without even realising it, all housed on your smartphone screen.

Your hands and mouth are often in close proximity to your phone, and many of us sleep with our gadgets near or on our beds. All of this increases the potential for harmful bugs to affect your health.

Preventing damage

How many of us place our iPhones right beside morning cups of coffee or afternoon pints? When spillages occur, our expensive smartphones are often right in the line of fire, which can end up causing costly repairs.

The iPhone 7 and newer models all boast dust and water-resistance, but did you know that tiny flecks of dirt and liquids can still wreak havoc on your phone’s health?

The charging port is one of the most vulnerable spots on an iPhone, as the seal allows for pesky particles to infiltrate the device and cause wear.

Older models lack water and dust resistance, so, it’s even more important to combat spillages and debris straightaway, minimising potential damage.

Smartphone owners should also add another layer of protection by securing iPhone insurance – an Apple device is a big investment, so dependable cover is vital.

How to clean your phone without damaging it

Whichever model you’re polishing, opt for a lint-free cloth.

Microfibre cloths are a good choice or, if you’re on a budget, an old T-shirt will do.

Contrary to popular belief, using washing up liquid, cleaning wipes or glass-cleaning products is not advisable or necessary – you’ll likely end up with an even greasier iPhone screen.

Water is the only ‘cleaning fluid’ you need, but if you’d feel happier using something a little more powerful, try a 50:50 mix of isopropyl alcohol and water instead.

Now, let’s take a look at the best way to clean your iPhone and say goodbye to smeary, smudgy screens…

iPhone 7 and newer models

To clean water and dust-resistant iPhone 7s and newer models, follow these 6 steps:

  1. Take your phone out of its case, should you have one
  2. Make sure the power is off and no cables are connected
  3. Dampen a clean cloth with a little water or your 50:50 mix
  4. Gently clean your phone with the cloth
  5. Wipe in a downward direction only, to avoid a streaky effect
  6. Use an additional clean and dry cloth to buff your phone

iPhone 6 and older models

If you have an older iPhone model, you’ll need to be a little more cautious when cleaning it. These models don’t have water resistance, so when you polish around vulnerable areas such as the ports, avoid using a damp cloth, if you can.

Other than that, you can follow the steps above – you can even have a go at your SIM card tray, for an extra deep clean.

6 iPhone care dos and don’ts

Don’t: use abrasive cleaning tools such as wire wool when polishing your phone

Do: get an easy-to-clean, shock-proof case with anti-yellowing technology

Don’t: throw your phone inside your bag – when loose, the device could easily be scratched by other objects

Do: purchase a washable pouch to store your gadget in during the day

Don’t: use an overly wet cloth when cleaning your iPhone, even if the model is water-resistant

Do: invest in an iPhone stand with good grip, minimising the chance of your phone being dropped in the bath or falling off your bedside table when streaming
