The iPhone 5S remained the most popular smartphone in the UK over January, representing its fourth consecutive month dominating the uSwitch.com Mobile Tracker.
Demand for Apple’s flagship smartphone has been consistent since it was released, and could increase in the weeks and months to come as prices drop. In January 2014, iPhone 5S deals were around £4 per month cheaper than those offered in October 2013.
Samsung’s Galaxy S4 has remained successful since its release, and has been among the top five most popular smartphones for ten months. In January the Galaxy S4 retained second-place for the second month in a row.
The only smartphones manufactured by companies other than Apple or Samsung in the top ten list were the HTC One and the Sony Xperia Z1, which held seventh and ninth place respectively. There are many reasons customers may have been drawn away from Apple and Samsung and towards these phones – the Sony Xperia Z1 has water-resistant casing and a 20-megapixel camera, while the HTC One has a 13-megapixel camera, BlinkFeed and HTC BoomSound and is available for around £21 per month.

This chart is set to change a lot over the next few weeks and months – Samsung is predicted to reveal a new smartphone in March, which will follow on from its successful Galaxy series. However, it looks like it will still be a challenge for manufacturers other than Apple and Samsung to shake the dominance of the two tech giants.
