Microsoft is betting that the popularity of their game Halo is enough to help boost the sales of their mobile devices, pads, and computers. By offering an affordable and exclusive version of the Halo franchise, Microsoft is betting on gamers taking up the devices that run Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8. The game called “Halo: Spartan Assault” (HSA) is a completely original game.

The new Halo game is set in the years that are between Halo 3 and Halo 4. This will prove popular with gamers and will be an interesting draw that may indeed cause a switch for those that are avid Android or Apple users. While the story line is new, the Halo characters will be familiar to fans of the popular game. The game covers 25 player missions with new weekly challenges, there are 40 achievements and medals available to gamers, as well as the ability to unlock achievements and emblems to be used in a Halo 4 game. There will also be a leaderboard.

Because of the intended use with Windows 8 the game release will be the first Halo edition that is designed to work on touchscreen devices. For those using computer devices without touchscreen there will be keyboard and mouse controls. Another change will be the presentation of the on screen action in a top-down viewpoint, which is different from the usual first-person shooter viewpoint offered by other Halo releases. The game is consistent across Windows 8 and Windows 8 phones which will allow pausing during the game and pick up where one left off on another device.

Dan Ayoub, executive producer of Halo, said in an interview with Xbox Wire blog, “With Halo: Spartan Assault, we wanted to take Halo out of the living room and create a brand new experience that was built specifically for a different screen. This is an opportunity for us to define what makes Halo unique on mobile platforms and really raise the bar for what is possible.”

The price point of the game is expected to be $6.99 and will be available in the Windows app and game store and Windows phone store in July.
