Best smart thermostats

As much as we might be trying to hold onto summer, there’s no denying that winter is on its way.

With the change in seasons comes shorter days and colder weather. This results in us seeing a sharp rise in our heating and electricity bills. But, it doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom. Smart thermostats are here to help us save money while staying warm.

Why not help the environment and your bank balance by investing in one of these top smart thermostats?

Nest Learning Thermostat

Nest is probably one of the first brands that spring to mind when thinking about smart thermostats, as it was the first to show the power of smart heating.

The 3rd generation Learning thermostat monitors users’ habits and will control the heating accordingly. It can also control the hot water and the easy-to-use app allows users to control heating remotely, while the unit’s activity sensors can sense if no-one is home and will adjust the temperature or simply turn off the heating.

If you dream of living in a smart home, Nest’s thermostat will also work with the Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide alarm and the Nest Cam camera.

Honeywell EvoHome

With smart thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs), Honeywell’s EvoHome covers hot water and the heating and lets you add room-by-room control. This means you can heat the rooms you’re using, instead of heating the whole house.

Temperature can be controlled through the main hub and through the app. You can even control the system with your voice with Amazon Alexa.

Hive Active Heating 2

Hive, from British Gas, includes a boiler receiver, an internet router hub, and a wall-mounted thermostat.

For remote thermostat control, users can access it through a browser, and the Android or iOS apps. It also supports Amazon Alexa.

As well as letting you change the temperature and the on/off control, the app can also track your location, so it can automatically activate or deactivate the heating depending on whether you’re at home or not.

You can also add Hive Active Light and smart plugs and switches, so you can better control your home’s total energy consumption.

Tado Smart Thermostat

The Tado Smart Thermostat works with 95% of the current heating systems, and also controls hot water.

And it is indeed one smart thermostat. The technology will learn the layout of your home and will work out the specific heat capacity. This means that if you like it to be 18 degrees when you get out of bed at 7am, it will kick the heating into action in advance.

The app also uses geofencing to track your location and your proximity to home, turning it off when you’re out and switching on in time for it to be heating up before you walk through the door.

Tado supports Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit.

Whatever smart thermostat you opt for, you might just have to accept paying a bit in the short-term, in order to reap the energy and bill savings these smart home kits can produce.
