Big game announcements from D23
When you think of games, Disney might not immediately spring to mind, but the company has a host of great titles under its belt.
D23 is the official Disney fan club, named in honour of the year Walt Disney founded his company, 1923. However, it is most well-known for its biennial expo event, the D23 Expo. And this year, the organisation has made some big games announcements…
Star Wars AR headset
Over the weekend, Disney revealed it is working on the development of an augmented reality headset, in partnership with LucasFilm and Lenovo.
The set-up is smartphone-based and Star Wars: Jedi Challenges will include large-scale battles, lightsabre fights and Chewbacca’s favourite game, Holochess.
Disney’s VP of advanced development, Mike Goslin, showcased the project and revealed footage of several of the games. According to Fortune, the footage included “tiny Rebel Alliance forces advancing across a carpeted bedroom, a life-size Stormtrooper squaring off against the viewer, and a circular Holochess board in action.”
While the details still haven’t been released, mysterious Disney are being, it looks like users will be able to live their childhood dreams of becoming a Jedi, with the brief teaser trailer showing that the hardware includes a lightsabre peripheral.
Kingdom Hearts 3
Kingdom Hearts is a cross-over between the worlds of Final Fantasy and Disney, and the franchise has a lot of fans.
In news that will make everyone feel old, it has been 12 years since Kingdom Hearts 2 was released.
But Kingdom Hearts 3 has been promised for some years now. Square Enix officially confirmed the game’s existence back in 2013, and more news was released at E3 2014 and E3 2015. However, the D23 Expo revealed even more details.
Creator Tetsuya Nomura announced there would finally be a Toy Story world, something fans have been demanding for over a decade. Nomura also revealed that there would be fewer worlds in Kingdom Hearts 3. It isn’t yet known just how many worlds will feature in Kingdom Hearts 3, and how many will be new or repeats from previous games, but here’s hoping that they’ve opted to choose quality over quantity.
We haven’t been given a specific date for when the game will be released, but we do know it will happen next year.
Okay, so we already knew about this game. But the D23 Expo gave us more insight into the game’s story.
The game’s developer, Insomniac, confirmed previous reports that it wouldn’t be connected to the recent film. Tech Radar reports that Insomniac said Spider-Man for PS4 will feature “a new universe and a new story”.
This game will be inspired by the Ultimate Spider-Man comic series, and the game play will see environments be fully interactive, allowing players to use objects in combat with enemies.
There wasn’t news of a more specific release date, other than 2018, but the developer said that since showing footage at E3 2017 it had worked on making significant improvements to gameplay, including better combat and web swinging.
