Gadget-tastic! Brits plan to invest in smart tech for the home

The ideal home of the future will be packed full of gadgets to make life easier, according to a new survey.

Smart home technology

From heating systems that recognise body temperature, to lighting that responds to the time of day, Brits are looking forward to creating smart homes with a wide range of functions that make for a more comfortable environment.

Other high-tech features that people want to see include windows that tint automatically in the sun, fingerprint scanning door locks and walls/doors that can block out the sound from the rest of the house when needed.

Half of the 2,000 adults surveyed think it’s important to keep up with the latest smart tech, while 39% believe it’s vital to invest in it now so that their homes are ‘future proof’, according to heating control company Drayton, which commissioned the study.

The main driving forces behind investing in technology were found to include cost savings (49%), security and safety (42%) and convenience (34%), but 83% said that sustainability is also important to them.

In the past five years, UK households have typically bought three smart tech devices, costing an average of £1,345 in total.

This is expected to increase to £1,625 in the next five years when a further four products will be purchased.

More than a quarter of homes already have a smart speaker, while one in ten own a smart doorbell and 13% have thermostats controlled via an app.

Interestingly, a third of those surveyed said that spending more time in their home during lockdown has made them consider investing in more technology.

Similarly, half said that the past six months of working from home has made them think about what improvements they would like to make, such as having better lighting and being able to control the heating of each room.
