How to add and switch between multiple Instagram accounts
Instagram was a breath of fresh air when it arrived on the scene in October 2010. While Twitter and Facebook focused (at least mostly) on sharing thoughts, Instagram brought us a social media platform centred solely on the sharing of photos.
It started off as an iOS-only app but is now one of the most popular social networks. It has 400 million daily active users, with 250 million people using its Stories feature every day – its rival, Snapchat, has around 166 million daily users.
And, despite ourselves, we can’t get enough of the platform. According to the latest figures from Instagram, users under the age of 25 spend just over 32 minutes on the site every day, while those over 25 use it for around 42 minutes per day.
And Instagram now lets you add up to five accounts. Here’s how:
Whether it’s to separate your personal account from a work account, an account focused on your interests or an account set up for your four-legged friend, many Instagram users now have multiple accounts.
To add multiple Instagram accounts simply open the app, go onto your profile and tap the settings icon in the top right hand corner – for iOS users this icon will be a cog while Android users will see three dots.
From here, scroll to the bottom of the settings list and tap Add Account. Then simply add the username and password of the account you’d like to add.
Switch between accounts
Following calls from users, Instagram updated the app in February this year, allowing people to toggle between multiple accounts from within the Instagram app.
This means it’s now easier than ever for users to switch between their accounts. Just go to your profile and tap your user name at the top of the screen. This will bring down a droplist of your accounts and then just tap the account you’d like to switch to.
Alternatively, press and hold the icon of your profile picture in the bottom right corner of the app. This will also bring up the list of your multiple accounts and you can tap the account you’d like to switch to.
Can you switch between accounts on a computer?
If you’d like to have a sneaky look at your dog’s account when you’re at work, you’ll have to stick to slyly looking at your phone for now. Instagram is very much focused on its mobile app, and hasn’t created a proper app for the computer.
Delete an added account
The novelty of having more than one account can quickly wear off. If you’d like to go back to having just the one account, it’s pretty easy.
Go to your profile and switch to the account you’d like to remove. Tap the settings icon in the top right hand corner, scroll down and tap Log out of [username]. Logging out will delete your account.
If you’d like be off Instagram for good, tapping Log out of All Accounts in the Instagram settings will remove all of the accounts you’ve added.
