What’s the difference between the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4?

Which Galaxy phone is deserving of your hard-earned cash? Do you go with the cheaper and more popular Flip 4 or the more powerful, yet more expensive, Fold 4?

Here are 6 key differences to help you decide between the two.

  1. A big difference in price

A key differentiator when buying any mobile phone is the initial outlay on the handset. The Fold 4 is the pricier of the two models by far. UK pricing for the Fold 4 at the time of writing is as follows:

  • Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 (256GB): £1,649
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 (512GB): £1,769
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 (1TB): £2,019

The Flip 4 is cheaper, although by no means a ‘budget’ phone. UK pricing for the Flip 4 at the time of writing is as follows:

  • Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 (128GB): £999
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 (256GB): £1,059
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 (512GB): £1,199

As you can see from the above, the Flip 4 remains the cheaper of the two folding Samsung models, and is a big reason why Flips have tended to be more popular than Folds. But while you will pay more, the Fold 4 is a very powerful device indeed offering users both a phone and tablet experience in one stunning package.

  1. Clamshell or book, which look and feel do you prefer?

Samsung has spent a lot of time and effort to get itself to the top of the tree when it comes to foldable phone tech, so you really are getting a cutting-edge premium product with both of these phones. However, while both have a foldable design, the look and feel of each is remarkably different.

The Flip 4 is a clamshell-style flip phone very much in the style of the iconic Motorola RAZR from the mid-2000s. It's pocket-sized, has great retro looks and is perfect for online content creators, and many other groups.

As well as the 6.7-inch internal display, the Flip 4 features a petite external display. Perfect for accessing things like notifications and checking the time, or answering calls quickly, without having to unfold the phone.

When open, the Flip 4 offers the standard phone experience we’re all used to. And if you take advantage of Samsung’s Bespoke service then it’s also more customisable than the Fold 4.

On the other hand, the Fold 4 is a fair amount heftier and folds vertically like a book. When folded closed, it's almost double the height of the Flip 4 and does feel thicker and heavier than a normal phone.

It’s got a substantial cover display so you can perform a range of quick phone tasks without having to unfold the phone. But when the Fold 4 is opened up it expands into a tablet-sized 7.6-inch interior screen, perfect for multitasking and a whole lot more.

  1. No S Pen support for Flip 4

For those who want to take multi-tasking to the next level, an S Pen stylus is an invaluable tool. Unfortunately, unlike the Fold 4, the Flip 4 doesn't include support for the S Pen (Fold Edition), nor the S Pen Pro.

It’s easy to see why this is so. Adding such support would have resulted in an increase in price and size. While the Flip 4's display really isn't big or wide enough to truly take advantage of the S Pen’s capabilities.

And when you consider that the whole idea of the Flip 4 is to fold into a smaller device, then adding an additional item to carry probably wouldn’t have gone down well with users.

Be aware, the Fold 4 doesn’t have a slot to hold the S Pen. You’ll need to invest in a case with a pen holder to keep everything safe.

Our Samsung phone insurance can also cover accessories if you lose them at the same time as your device.

  1. Power performance from the Fold 4

phone being folded in half

The Fold 4 is clearly being marketed at so-called ‘power users’ looking for an all-in-one device with the capabilities of a tablet and a phone. So, there are some important differences when it comes to performance.

First off, the Fold 4 runs Android 12L, rather than the standard Android 12 found in the Flip 4. Android 12L is designed for the bigger displays found on tablets and foldables like the Fold 4 and will make multitasking more powerful and intuitive.

Notable software features in the Fold 4 include its ability to run three apps at the same time across the screen. There's also now a fixed taskbar, making multitasking a lot quicker and more convenient.

Of interest to business users in particular, the Fold 4 also comes with Samsung DeX. This lets you extend your Fold 4 into a desktop computing experience by connecting wirelessly to an external display and pairing a keyboard and mouse. Phone, tablet and PC all at the tap of a button, what’s not to like?

As for the Flip 4, it doesn't have all of those power user features. Instead it’s a great looking smartphone that has the ability to fold in half and fit snugly in even the smallest of pockets.

  1. More advanced camera system

With a triple rear camera set up, the Fold 4 matches that of the Galaxy S22. So you’ll find a 50 MP main sensor, 12 MP ultra-wide sensor and a 10MP telephoto sensor with a 3x optical zoom.

Meanwhile the Flip 4 has a dual rear camera set up offering a 12 MP main sensor and a 12MP ultra-wide sensor. So, the Fold 4 is a clear winner here.

  1. Bigger battery

As you would expect from its larger size, the Fold 4 has a bigger battery under its bonnet. Samsung has given the Fold 4 a 4,400 mAh battery as opposed to the relatively small 3,700 mAh unit inside the Flip 4.

That said, because of the larger displays you probably shouldn’t expect the Fold 4 to last a great deal longer between charges compared to the Flip 4. In fact, depending on what you’re using it for the Fold 4 might last even less time.

Gadget reviewers love putting smartphone batteries through their paces. In a recent PhoneArena battery test, the following scores were reached:

How long does the Galaxy Z Flip 4 last compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 4?

When it comes to investing in a folding phone many potential buyers will obviously be keen to know how long those remarkable screens will last. Is durability a further difference between the two phones?

Well, Samsung claims the screens in both devices have been certified to fold up to 200,000 times. Which should be more than enough for a few years use by even the most serious smartphone addict.

With the same Armour aluminium frame, Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+ and IPX8 water resistance, in theory the two phones should offer similar durability. Indeed, both the Fold 4 and Flip 4 underwent vigorous testing by YouTuber Zack Nelson of JerryRigEverything, ultimately passing with flying colours.

Samsung has worked hard on the durability of these incredible folding screens. But it’s still worth finding out whether your Samsung phone insurance covers screen damage for your foldable.

Brilliant accessories perfect for your Galaxy Z Fold 4 or Galaxy Z Flip 4

With modern mobile phones such an essential part of everyday life, it’s no wonder that adding an accessory or two to your shopping basket is so popular among tech buyers.

Whether you’re in the market for a new Fold 4 or a Flip 4, consider snapping up these extras while you’re in the mood.

Phone cover

The quickest way to keep your stunning phone in great condition is to buy it a brand-new cover. Samsung makes custom-designed covers for both the Fold 4 and the Flip 4.

If you’ve opted for a bespoke edition of the Flip 4 then this clear cover with ring attachment is perfect. It will let you show off your phone’s unique colour while also holding it securely.

For the Fold 4 you’ll want this standing cover with an adjustable kickstand to hold your screen up to a comfy 55° angle. And if you’ve also bought an S Pen Fold stylus then there’s a handy pocket for it, too.

Screen protector

Looking for a screen protector for your folding display? Then Android Central has a rundown of some of the best available now for both the Fold 4 and the Flip 4.

25W power adapter

Neither the Fold 4 nor the Flip 4 includes a charger in the box. So, if you want to benefit from that 25W Super Fast Charging then you’ll need to buy one of these.

Galaxy Buds2Pro

Wireless headphones are a must-have for most smartphone users. And these from Samsung are some of the most comfortable you’ll find.

The Bora Purple colour is probably our favourite but you can also go for Graphite or White. These also feature active noise cancellation so you can focus on the music.

15W Wireless Charger Duo

If you want to wirelessly charge your phones and your Buds2Pro at the same time then you’ll want this slim but powerful charger.

Power bank

As you can see from the battery bench tests by Phone Arena above, both the Fold 4 and the Flip 4 will probably need charging at least once a day if you use them often. With that in mind, a power bank is a useful accessory to keep you well topped up.

Samsung Galaxy Watch5 Pro

One of the highlights of 2022 for Samsung fans was the arrival of the eagerly awaited Samsung Galaxy Watch5 Pro. From tracking workouts to checking performance it’s easy to see why wearables have become such a big business over the past few years.

While the Watch5 Pro is highly durable, it’s still important to get gadget insurance to complement your Samsung phone insurance cover.

Keyboard

One for the business-focused Fold 4 users. A Bluetooth keyboard will add even more flex to your phone.

Samsung phone insurance

An essential rather than an accessory, but it’s certainly something you’ll want to buy at the same time as your new device.

And if you do decide to buy any of these smartphone accessories then check whether they’re covered by your Samsung phone insurance policy. If they’re lost, stolen or damaged at the same time as your other gadgets, then you might get them replaced.
