What type of phone insurance do you need for the iPhone 7?
As every year comes around, there’s always a new range of Apple iPhones to get tech lovers all hot and bothered.
But not everyone wants to buy the latest gadget on offer. Instead, many people would prefer a slightly older, but a lot cheaper, model from Apple’s iPhone back catalogue.
But if you’re buying one of the most affordable phones on the market, do you still need to insure it? Well, yes you certainly do. And you’ll want a phone insurance policy that’s been specially designed for iPhones and their unique needs.
While you won't get the lightning-fast, powerful performance offered by the latest iPhone flagships, the iPhone 7 is still a great option – and one that’s well worth protecting with the specialist cover offered by a mobile phone insurance policy.
Insure your iPhone 7 for stress-free times.
Top 10 features of a great iPhone insurance policy
When you’re searching for an iPhone insurance policy to suit your budget and your new iPhone 7, what type of cover should you be looking out for? Let’s take a look at the top 10 features you’ll want from your next iPhone 7 insurance policy, and why you would be wise to protect your tech.
1. Accidental damage
While the iPhone 7 was certainly a step up from the iPhone 6 in terms of durability, you’re not going to get the kind of protection offered by the latest in iPhone tech.
With that in mind, an iPhone 7 might not stand up to the same amount of rough treatment as the latest generation of iPhones.
For example, the super-tough Ceramic Shield protecting the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 models offers many times better drop protection.
As part of your insurance cover, you’ll want even minor screen cracks to be repaired.
Or for your iPhone insurance to replace your iPhone if the damage cannot be repaired.
According to Apple, repairing an iPhone 7 screen will set you back over £150. And remember, if there’s any other damage from the accident then you’ll have to pay more.
As well as the expense, you might be left without a phone during the repair.
If you need to send your iPhone directly to an Apple Repair Centre, it could be between six and eight days before it’s ready for pick-up.
If you rely on your mobile phone and you need instant cover then check it’s included in your iPhone 7 insurance policy.
2. Liquid damage
There was much excitement when the iPhone 7 was first released. With the iPhone 7 being the first iPhone to offer water resistance and a rating of IP67, the iPhone 7 is capable of surviving the occasional dunk in the toilet.
But be aware, no iPhone is completely impervious to liquid damage.
An IP67 rating means the iPhone 7 can last up to 30 minutes in one metre of water.
But compare this to the IP68 rating of the most recent iPhones which can last up to 30 minutes at a depth of six metres.
So, the iPhone 7 is definitely not ‘waterproof’ and really should be nowhere near the swimming pool.
Also be aware water and dust resistance are not permanent conditions and resistance might decrease as a result of wear and tear.
Always double check liquid damage cover is included in your mobile phone insurance policy. With an iPhone 7 you really don’t want to take the chance on your insurance cover.
3. Breakdown insurance
Although the iPhone 7 model is a little older now, it is still a very reliable gadget.
However, just like any mobile, they can be liable to break down.
Just as with any phone, battery failure can be an issue.
Whether it’s from normal everyday use or a manufacturing fault, you might start to find yourself having to charge your phone more often than before.
So, it might be time for a new battery.
And for an iPhone 7 that can cost you £49.
And if that doesn’t work then there might be some other issue in need of repair. If the repair is done by Apple, then you could be looking at around £250.
Although an Apple authorised service provider could charge less, or more!
Knowing that even the most well designed and manufactured machine can suffer a malfunction once in a while, taking the time to insure against these costs is a real no-brainer.
Before agreeing to an insurance policy, also check the level of insurance excess you’ve chosen.
Is it right for you? A high excess certainly points to lower insurance premiums, but if a problem happens, can you afford it? Be aware you will need to pay the insurance policy excess in order to proceed with the claim.
4. Unauthorised usage
There are many reasons why someone would opt for a budget option like the iPhone 7 when it comes to a new mobile phone.
But cutting costs has to be one of the main ones.
So, when you’ve made the effort to save money by buying a budget phone, what happens if it gets stolen or lost?
Even if it isn’t a top-of-the-range flagship phone, a thief could easily rack up thousands of pounds in unauthorised calls and data usage.
By arranging insurance cover through us you could be refunded up to £2,500 if this happens.
Just like any iPhone, you can easily set up the Find My iPhone app feature in order to locate a lost phone.
But do you really want to rely on that?
Particularly when protection against loss can easily be added as an optional level of extra insurance cover.
More often than not, most thieves looking to steal an iPhone will probably be looking for the latest, most-desirable and expensive mobiles.
So, in some ways your iPhone 7 should be safer from this kind of harm than models like the iPhone 12 or 13.
But that doesn’t mean that insurance against theft isn’t worth having.
Many thieves are opportunistic and may steal any mobile phone that’s available.
Particularly if it looks like a recent purchase.
In addition, thieves may also steal your iPhone 7 along with other items.
For example, if someone steals your bag, they’ll not only take your wallet and house keys but also your mobile.
You can never have too much insurance in such situations.
No matter how old the iPhone model, guarding against theft is still one of the most popular reasons to invest in mobile phone insurance cover.
7. Accessory cover
There’s no doubt the iPhone 7 is still a great phone.
However, as great as it is, it can’t do everything.
There are still plenty of smart accessories available to make this mobile even better.
From wireless headphones and charging docks to cases and covers, which ones will be right for you?
But if you’re out and about and something happens to your iPhone then chances are it will also happen to the accessories too.
That’s why a Gadget Cover iPhone insurance policy will protect any accessories (up to £150) if they’re lost, stolen or damaged at the same time as your iPhone.
And if you’re very prone to accidents then be sure to find out if there’s a limit on the number of insurance claims you can make in a year.
8. Worldwide cover
As one of the best ‘budget’ options when it comes to iPhones, the iPhone 7 is a popular phone to take on holiday or when travelling abroad on business.
By leaving your flashy flagship at home you can relax that bit more.
When you’re in a far-flung place and you don’t know your way around you’ll be thankful for having the right insurance.
If you do plan on travelling outside the UK then check you’ve got worldwide insurance cover included as part of your policy before you leave.
10. Family cover
While the iPhone 7 may look dated compared to an all-singing, all-dancing modern iPhone, it’s got a lot going for it.
With a fingerprint sensor, stereo speakers, water resistance, good battery life, and a very affordable price tag, it’s perfect for first-time smartphone users.
This includes children – simply set them up with a SIM card and they will be ready to go.
Letting a close family member use your iPhone 7?
Then make sure family cover is also included as part of your mobile phone insurance policy.
Kids can be careless at times, so good cover can give you peace of mind.
10. E-wallet cover
With so many shops, restaurants, petrol stations, taxis and other businesses accepting phone payments, it’s also important to include e-wallet cover in your mobile phone insurance policy.
This means if your iPhone 7 is accidentally lost or stolen and unauthorised transactions are made using your e-Wallet facility then insurance could refund you up to a maximum of £500.
Remember, even if you have an older phone, thieves may still want to steal it in order to access your e-Wallet.
But it’s always important to make sure the insurance policy you choose has all the cover features you require.
It’s also worth considering whether you would be happier to pay monthly or annually.
Does the iPhone 7 still offer great value? And why phone insurance cover is so important
Whatever year we’re in there’s no doubt that Apple’s latest iPhone range will include some of the most expensive phones on the market.
It’s a fact of life that if you want quality then you’re going to have to pay for it.
That said, as each year passes, older iPhone models get cheaper.
Currently the iPhone 7 is one of the best value phones you can get for the price.
Why is that? Well, here’s 10 great reasons.
- Classic retro-style and great build quality – You’ll get the Apple look but without the hefty price tag.
- IP67 water and dust resistance rating – It may not be IP68, but it’s more than enough for everyday use.
- Touch ID – The latest iPhones have ditched Touch ID in favour of Face ID. And not everyone is convinced this is for the best.
- 4.7-inch Retina HD display – Still offers a great quality user experience.
- Comfortable size – Unless you’ve got enormous hands, many modern phones are difficult to use one-handed. Not so with the iPhone 7. Measuring in at 138.3 x 67.1 x 7.1mm and 138g it’s very comfortable to use.
- A10 Fusion chip – Apple’s quad-core processor has aged really well. Even today, performance feels slick and snappy, particularly when used for web browsing, social media, and app use.
- Decent cameras – The iPhone 7 cameras still provide decent performance.
- Available in 32GB capacity – The cheapest option if you’re a light user.
- Available in Rose Gold – If you love the unique look this brought to the iPhone then this is one of the few models to feature this sought-after colour.
- Brilliant new iOS 15 features – The iPhone 7 is still 100% supported by Apple. So, you can download the latest iOS 15 updates including great new features such as dark mode and picture-in-picture videos.

Mobile phones have become an integral part of our lifestyles. Many of us would never leave home without a phone in our pocket. And most of the time, it’s not simple phones but sophisticated and expensive smartphones that we carry with us everywhere.
Carrying a phone like that means that you’re vulnerable to dangers ranging from theft to loss and damage. High-quality smartphones are usually expensive and to pay for one, you may have agreed to sign a contract - which you’ll need to keep on paying even if you lose or damage your phone.
However, you can protect yourself against such risks by covering your phone with specialist mobile phone insurance.
Benefits can vary from insurer to insurer - that’s why it’s smart to shop around and look through various offers before settling on an insurance company.
Before purchasing a mobile phone insurance contract, make sure to read the Terms & Conditions carefully. That’s how you’ll be able to tell which clauses and exclusions apply to the type of insurance you’ve chosen.
A critical part of your mobile phone insurance is the type of theft it covers. For instance, theft without force or unattended theft may not be covered. If someone steals your phone from your pocket or takes it from a table in a cafe when you’re distracted, you’ll be left uninsured. Moreover, some insurers may refuse to pay out in specific cases - for example, if you forget your phone and leave it by accident on a train or taxi. If you’re deemed to have been careless by the provider, you might not be covered by the insurance. Any sort of water damage might fall under this exclusion too.
Pay attention to the terms stated in your contract. Some insurers require you to report the phone as lost to the police and the insurer within a specific time limit such as 24 hours or less.
The exclusions to this mobile phone insurance include:
- Leaving the phone unattended
- Theft from a vehicle or premises where there is no visible sign of forced entry
- Lack of proof of purchase or receipt
- Any claim where the phone has not been used since the insurance has been taken out
Make sure that the policy you choose has all the cover you need. Check if it provides instant cover, whether there’s a limit on the number of claims per year, and how much the excess is.
When searching for phone cover, consider gadget insurance. Many providers offer that type of insurance that may cover mobile phones - just make sure to specify your smartphone when describing the gadget in question. You can insure more than one device with the same policy - for example, your laptop, camera, and tablet.
Some types of home insurance include mobile phone coverage as well. While these can be simple and cost-effective, they come with downsides such as lengthy claim processing that could leave you without a mobile phone for a more extended period of time.
With gadget cover your phone will be covered from the moment you finalise the purchase of insurance. You won’t have to wait for the insurance policy to be processed and applied within a specific number of days from your purchase. Instead, you can enjoy coverage right from the moment of purchase.
To make a claim, you need to do the following:
If your claim is for damage, we will ask you to send the gadget to our nominated repair centre where we can inspect and repair it. We aim to repair or replace items within 5 to 7 working days.
If your claim if for the theft or loss of your gadget you must report the theft or loss to the police and your service provider no later than 48 hours after you notice that your gadget is missing.
Next, you need to contact us. Make sure to do that as quickly as possible - within 48 hours from discovering loss or theft of your gadget.
You can call our dedicated Claim Advisors on 0203 794 9294. You can also send us an email to firstname.lastname@example.org. If you take longer than 48 hours to contact us, you risk your claim being delayed or rejected.
We aim to process claims within 48 hours, once we receive all the required documentation - which includes proof of ownership. If we approve the claim, you will need to pay the policy excess to let us proceed with the claim. Make sure that you provide us with all the required documentation and pay the excess as quickly as possible - any delay may make the process longer.
For many smartphone users, the most valuable content on their phone, that no insurance company is able to replace, is their contacts, photos, files, and other pieces of personal information.
There are many things you can do right now to make sure that data stored on your phone is protected against loss. Consider the available cloud storage options for creating backups of your data. Storing them in the cloud offers a significant advantage - they will be available to you from any device connected to the internet.
Once you settle on an adequate storage solution, schedule regular backups of your data to make sure that all your files and information are located in your storage.
All in all, the best advice to keep your phone is safe, is to look after it and to protect it against the hassle and cost that comes with loss, theft, or damage.
